The Law & Order series has had a long tradition of presenting or dealing with some fascinating issues, from racial relations, to illiteracy to DNA spoofing; even little known medical conditions like Fatal Famillial Insomnia. And last night's episode of Special Victims Unit did it again.

They told the story of people who underwent surgicals procedures to have their ears pointed like elves from the Lord of the Rings movies.

A Google search afterward revealed an astonishing truth: it's a real thing. An irreverisble, and often excruciatingly painful surgery, so that people can get a different look.

It's amazing what people are willing to put themselves through.

SVU is coming to the end of season thirteen, and has remained strong, though it lost something with the departure of one of the two leads Christopher Meloni at the end of last year when he was unable to renegotiate his contract to his satisfaction.
